Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) Civic Centre in Jalan Yong Shook Lin is expected to reopen by July or August next year, after upgrading works are completed.
Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said the refurbishment covered several key areas, including the auditorium and banquet hall.
“The upgrades involve installing new seats, replacing carpets as well as fitting a sound system and acoustic panels in the auditorium,” he said.
The banquet hall, he said, would have improved lighting and soundproofing, while the centre’s reception desk would be upgraded.
He shared the updates with StarMetro during MBPJ’s Deepavali celebration at Laman MBPJ in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The event, which would usually be held at the civic centre, had to be relocated due to the ongoing renovation works.
More than 500 MBPJ staff gathered for the festive event organised by the employees.
Deepavali reception committee chairman Kavitha Sekharan, who is also MBPJ assistant health director, said all performances were presented by homegrown talents.
“No external performers were hired. Everyone is a local talent,” she said.
The programme included performances by MBPJ’s cultural troupe and children from the city council-run kindergarten.
The troupe previously won first place at the Malaysian Government Servants’ Welfare and Sports Council competition in 2022.
The celebration, which was open to the public, offered a spread of Indian dishes such as pani puri, briyani, chapati and masala tea.
In his speech, Mohamad Zahri commended city council staff for their achievements this year.
“MBPJ targeted 35 awards this year, ranging from state to national, and even international.
“As of Nov 8, we have successfully secured 56 awards and expect to clinch four more by year-end,” he said.
