SELANGOR now has eight crematoriums, both public and private, as of last October.
These include two under Petaling Jaya City Council (one public and one private), while Shah Alam City has one public facility.
State investment, trade and mobility committee chairman Ng Sze Han said there was one public crematorium each under Klang Royal City Council, Subang Jaya City Council and Sepang Municipal Council.
“Two more public crematoriums are being built, under Kuala Langat Municipal Council and Hulu Selangor Municipal Council respectively,” said Ng, who is co-chairman for the Selangor Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism special committee (Limas).
“The provision of public crematorium facilities in Selangor is being implemented to ensure all levels of society, including B40 communities, have access to cremation at a reasonable rate.”
He said this in reply to G. Gunarajah (PH-Sentosa) during the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam yesterday.
“The state government has implemented the Khairat Darul Ehsan (KDE) programme for Selangor residents aged 50 and above as well as disabled individuals who are voters and Selangor residents,” said Ng.
“Upon the passing of their family member, the next-of-kin will receive a RM1,000 contribution.”
He said existing recipients under both Skim Mesra and Iltizam Selangor Sihat scheme needed to verify their details and agree to become KDE members via the kde.yawas.com.my website starting May 5 this year.
Ng said local authorities were encouraged to work with private operators to provide funeral management services at a lower fee for residents in need.
Through Limas, he said the state government would also hold discussions with stakeholders to review the packages offered by existing crematorium operators to ensure rates were reasonable and affordable.
Gunarajah welcomed Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari’s announcement that Selangor Budget 2026 would include RM1mil for the construction of a crematorium in Kuala Selangor.
On his question about whether there were plans to build crematoriums in the Selayang and Ampang Jaya municipalities, Ng said that during the Covid-19 pandemic, the state government tasked all local authorities to find suitable locations to build crematoriums.
“However, areas such as Ampang Jaya and Selayang have rapid development and high population density, so it is difficult to find a suitable site for a crematorium that is far from residential and commercial areas.”
As such, he said efforts were still underway to identify suitable sites before funds could be allocated for the facility.
