Malaysia, Algeria seek closer ties

ALGERIA is looking to deepen and strengthen strategic relations with Malaysia, with both nations seeking to expand economic opportunities.

Algerian Ambassador to Malaysia Abdelhafid Bounour said both countries shared many similarities.

“The bilateral relationship between Malaysia and Algeria is excellent and continues to develop day by day.

“This will further solidify our cooperation,” he said.

Bounour added that Algeria hoped to engage more closely with Asean countries, especially Malaysia, as both shared similar principles and values.

He was speaking at Algeria’s National Day celebration marking the 71st anniversary of the Algerian Liberation Revolution, at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

“This is a very dear day for all Algerians because it marks the anniversary of our revolution, through which we gained independence from French colonialism,” he said.

Also in attendance were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

Zambry said the celebration reflected the Algerian people’s perseverance and pursuit of freedom, while further strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in higher education.

“In the education sector, Algeria has sent its students to Malaysia, and likewise, they have provided opportunities for Malaysian students to pursue studies at their universities,” he added.

According to the Higher Education Ministry, a total of 47 Malaysians were pursuing their studies in Algeria as of 2024.
