Mohd Fauzi says MBSA ordered its contractors to thoroughly clean drains and ponds.
Flood mitigation works have begun in parts of Shah Alam, Selangor, to reduce flood incidents, says mayor Datuk Mohd Fauzi Mohd Yatim.
“We have put up flood walls and built temporary retention ponds at six hotspots,” he said at a Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) full board meeting at Wisma MBSA yesterday.
He said flood mitigation works were completed at Jalan Sempuran 25/81, Jalan Sampoton 3/11, Kemuning Greenhill Section 32 and Jalan Teluk Batu at AMJ Industrial Park.
According to the mayor, the projects in Taman Bukit Kemuning and Taman Greenhill 3 in Bukit Rimau are in the planning stage and work is expected to commence mid-November.
“Flood walls have been put up at Jalan Haji Bakri in Taman Bunga Raya, Section 30 and the area near the monsoon drain as well as residences at Taman Alam Indah in Section 33.”
As for maintenance, he said MBSA had instructed its contractors to thoroughly clean drains and ponds.
Meanwhile, in anticipation of Visit Malaysia 2026, Mohd Fauzi said MBSA has several initiatives planned.
For this year alone, the budget for promotion and programmes was RM300,000.
This includes the printing of brochures and familiarisation trips with travel writers.
“One of the main draws of Shah Alam is Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (also known as the Blue Mosque), which receives up to 100,000 visitors a year.
“Tourists come from as far as Japan, China, South Korea and the US.
“We are looking to position Shah Alam as a ‘City of Arts’ so we plan to have cultural shows and workshops at Laman Budaya every weekend starting from next year,” said Mohd Fauzi.
Traffic woes at the Elmina housing area was another hot topic at the full board meeting.
It was determined that the cause of congestion was motorists who use the housing area as a shortcut to the Guthrie Corridor Expressway.
Mohd Fauzi said MBSA would sit down with the developer to discuss short and mid-term solutions.
He said that while traffic impact assessment studies were carried out before planning permission was issued for a development, there were other variables, such as developments taking place in other areas.
For new upcoming developments, he said there would be an emphasis on public transportation.
