Athletes from the Sarawak Judo Association (PJS) secured a total of eight medals at the 2025 Johor Judo Open Championship in Kluang, Johor.
The team’s medal haul included one gold, three silver and four bronze medals.
Ashley Tan Yi Xuan, 15, clinched the sole gold medal, while Soh Yew Ing, 29, Mohamad Firdaus Apek Dana Julie, 15, and Mardya Fatasha Ali, 15, each earned a silver.
The bronze medallists were Aubrey Ryvia Medan, 14, Ethan Lee Ming Hao, 14, Nur Kzumyarah Elyana Mohd Bakri, 15, and Joyce Felixson, 19.
PJS president Datuk Seri Lau Kueng Chai said he was proud of the athletes.
“They displayed remarkable fighting spirit during the competition.
“Not only did they gain valuable experience, but also showcased the promising potential of Sarawak’s judo talent on the national stage,” he said.
Kueng Chai added that the tournament provided exposure, allowing athletes to identify the opponents’ strengths while working on their own weaknesses.
“I believe they have learned a great deal from this experience. It has opened their eyes to the intense level of competition out there and will serve as motivation for them to continue advancing in this sport,” he said.
PJS deputy president Datuk Lau Kiing Sieng said the team’s performance was expected to inspire judo athletes from other states as they gear up for future national and international tournaments.
