Semiconductor sector to drive Sarawak's industrial development, says Abang Jo

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The semiconductor industry will drive the next phase of Sarawak's industrial development and contribute towards achieving the state's post-Covid development strategy (PCDS) goals, says Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.

The Premier said the establishment of SMD Semiconductor Sdn Bhd in 2022 was a strategic decision by the state government to build a conducive ecosystem and position Sarawak as a provider of advanced semiconductor solutions in the region by 2030.

"The Sarawak Semiconductor Roadmap 2030 provides a clear pathway for this journey.

"Through SMD Semiconductor, we are taking deliberate steps towards higher-value segments such as chip design, while building local talent and strengthening partnerships with global industry players," he said in a speech delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan at SMD Semiconductor's Hari Raya open house here on Monday (March 30).

Abang Johari said Sarawak's approach was not to compete directly with established semiconductor hubs.

Instead, he said, Sarawak will complement national strengths by focusing on niche areas and leveraging its advantages in energy and long-term planning.

"To succeed, we must invest in our people and nurture a strong pool of local talent.

"We must continue to build institutions that support research, innovation and industry collaboration," he added.

Abang Johari also said the Aidilfitri celebration was an occasion to remember the concept of amanah, or trust and responsibility.

"Every leader, professional and individual holds a piece of that 'amanah': to advance Sarawak with integrity, foresight and an unwavering commitment to the wellbeing of our people," he said.

He added that the state government's credibility was defined not just by plans but by results and real impact felt by the people, whether through better infrastructure, jobs, educational opportunities or the assurance of a brighter future.

"As we celebrate Aidilfitri, let us renew our commitment to unity, integrity and shared responsibility in building a high-value, future-ready economy for Sarawak," he said.
