ONCE an underused space, the Seri Sarawak Public Housing’s park has now transformed into a safe and welcoming space.
It is the second park under the “Merdeka 118 Public Realm Improvement” programme by PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd (PNBMV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB).
The initiative is part of the broader KL Heritage agenda to rejuvenate Kuala Lumpur’s historical core through people-focused urban renewal.
Achieved through collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Think City, more upgrades are planned around the precinct.
Spanning about 16,000sq ft, the park provides more than 7,500 residents with a green space designed for recreation and community interaction.
“This meaningful initiative is a strong example of how Kuala Lumpur can progress through community-based programmes,” Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said at the park’s unveiling.
“By working hand-in-hand with public and private partners, we are able to create tangible impact that directly benefits the community and translates into lasting positive outcomes.
“Our elderly folks now have spaces to stay active, while families and children can enjoy a safe and welcoming place.
“Initiatives like this bring us closer to realising our vision of ‘A Prosperous City for All by 2030’,” said the mayor.
With an investment of about RM800,000, the underused space now has children’s play areas, shaded seating, lighting, landscaping, better walkways and drainage. It offers new community spaces for active living and promoting stronger neighbourly bonds.
PNBMV’s commitment to sustainable methods was also a key focus, with the use of durable, low-maintenance materials, native plants and permeable pavements for stormwater management to ensure the park remains environmentally friendly and cost-effective to maintain over the long term.
PNBMV chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Ab Aziz Tengku Mahmud said: “We are encouraged from seeing how the first park at Jalan Hang Tuah Public Housing (PA) has made a real difference for its community.
“The upgrade benefitted over 800 residents and the park has become a lively space where families and friends come together.
“Building on that success, we are pleased to bring the same spirit to PA Seri Sarawak.”
The vision was to ensure that Merdeka 118 grew in harmony with the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Think City managing director Datuk Hamdan Abdul Majeed said neighbourhood parks were not just green spaces, but social infrastructure that strengthen bonds and well-being and gave a sense of belonging.
“The transformation of PA Seri Sarawak demonstrates how community-centred placemaking can turn an overlooked corner into a shared asset.
“Within the larger KL Heritage story, it is these people-first interventions that keep our city liveable, sustainable and loveable,” Hamdan added.
“This upgrading of our park gives us a renewed sense of belonging,” said PA Seri Sarawak Residents Association chairman Mohd Azmi Zakaria.
“For many of us, it shows that our community matters and that we are not left behind in the city’s progress.
“We are deeply grateful for this transformation which will inspire residents to take even greater care of our shared spaces and strengthen the spirit of togetherness,” he added.
