A CAR workshop in Bandar Bukit Raja was slapped with two compounds for discharging used engine oil into a drain and failing to maintain its premises.
Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said the workshop was also fined RM2,000.
“We received complaints from nearby businesses that the corner-lot workshop had placed vehicles, awaiting repairs, in public parking bays and encroached onto the road.
“During an inspection, city council enforcement officers found that used engine oil had been discharged into a drain behind the workshop,” she added.
Norfiza said the workshop owner was verbally warned about the encroachment while workers were told to remove vehicles blocking the way.
“MBDK Licensing Department issued RM1,000 compound for pouring used engine oil into the drain and another RM1,000 for failing to maintain the premises,” she said.
The city council relied on Bylaw 17 (2007) for drainage cleanliness and Bylaw 21 for failure to keep the premises clean.
Norfiza said the careless dumping of oil into drains contributed to significant environmental pollution besides damaging city infrastructure.
“Oil dumped into drains contaminates groundwater, harms ecosystems and poison wildlife.
“The workshop owner was advised to adopt proper disposal methods, including collecting used oil in sealed containers for recycling,” she said.
She added that MBDK would revisit the workshop to check on it.
