New task force to coordinate Selangor’s response to global disruptions

THE Selangor government will hold a meeting on Friday (April 3) afternoon to formalise a special task force that will coordinate the state’s response to potential supply and economic disruptions, says Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the formalisation of the task force could be announced as early as today, or by Monday (April 6) at the latest.

Those expected to be involved are representatives from state departments and agencies, local authorities, district offices and state government-linked entities.

Amirudin said the task force would review proposals before recommending any follow-up measures.

He said the move came as the state prepared for possible supply-side pressures amid evolving developments in the Middle East conflict.

"This crisis is different from the Covid-19 pandemic.

"During the pandemic, the issue was the market – supply was sufficient, but there was no demand because people stayed at home.

"Now, the issue is supply – the market is there, but supply is not necessarily guaranteed.

"There is no need to declare an emergency for now," he said at the state-level "Jelajah Taat Setia Madani" (Madani Loyalty Tour) programme in Section 7, Shah Alam, on Friday morning.

Amirudin also said food and energy supplies were still sufficient for now, but the situation might not last indefinitely.

"Based on what we have seen, food supply can still hold for now, but we must be prepared," he added.

"Energy supply can still hold, although not for a very long period. So we must also be prepared."

He said all state departments had been instructed to submit proposals, which would be assessed by the task force.

"The task force will be ready to evaluate these proposals.

"We will take follow-up measures together, as we have done in previous situations," he said.

He added that the task force would work closely with federal agencies, local authorities and other government-linked entities to ensure all matters are looked into cohesively.

The Sungai Tua assemblyman also urged civil servants to communicate government measures clearly to the public.

"We must explain the situation clearly and must not allow misleading or partial information to spread," he stressed.
