KUALA Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) has engaged the service of three licensed debt collectors to recover unpaid assessment tax as part of efforts to improve its revenue this year.
Its president Mohd Hasry Nor Mohd said MPKL was targeting property owners who had accumulated more than three years of unpaid assessment taxes.
“We have appointed three debt collectors to track these owners. A special squad was also formed for this purpose.
“To improve collection of assessments, MPKL is also placing mobile counters at open-air markets to facilitate payments,” he said at the local council’s full board meeting.
Mohd Hasry said Kuala Langat residents were encouraged to use the MyMPKL app to make payments.
“We find that many still prefer to pay physically but we want the public to switch and use the app,” he said, adding that there were plans to widen types of app payments.
Mohd Hasry said that as of July 31, MPKL had secured 70% (RM80.7mil) of this year’s projected revenue of RM115.3mil.
The revenue comprised tax and non-tax sources as well as reimbursement of expenses, among others, he said.
Collection from tax stood at RM43.1mil while non-tax sources brought RM31mil in revenue, he added.
Mohd Hasry said MPKL had spent some RM60mil as of July 31, which covered management and development expenses.
“Management expenses took up RM46.5mil while development spending recorded some RM11.8mil.”
He said waste management took the largest share of development expenses at RM10.4mil, which was nearly 90% of the amount spent on the development allocation so far.
He attributed this to the increase in account holders in recent years, numbering more than 116,000, which contributed to higher volume of waste in the municipality. — By FARID WAHAB
