SMK Methodist (ACS) Melaka alumni launch fundraiser to preserve, upgrade alma mater

MELAKA: Former students of SMK Methodist (ACS), one of the oldest schools in the historic city, have launched a fundraising campaign to preserve their alma mater’s legacy and upgrade its ageing facilities.

Old Boys’ Association chairman Koh Tiam Guan said the school has shaped generations of leaders in business, government and society for the past 115 years.

“Our school is not just a building. It has been a second home to many of us,” he said in an interview on Tuesday (Aug 26).

Koh said the campaign aims to raise at least RM500,000 to carry out urgent repairs, including electrical rewiring and roof works. He noted that funds will also be used to modernise classrooms with new furniture and digital teaching tools.

“Most importantly, part of the money will go towards student welfare to help underprivileged students so that every child has equal opportunities,” he added.

The school's principal Soh Lay Hui said she had approached the association for help and was encouraged by their swift response.

“They came back like a brigade ready to charge.

"This is not only about repairs, but about ensuring a safe and inspiring environment for every child,” she said, noting that many of the school’s facilities date back to the 1970s.

The campaign will conclude with an anniversary dinner on Sept 13 at a restaurant at Taman Teknologi Cheng in Cheng here, where major donors will be honoured as the “Gong Striker of the Night.”
