A NEW pedestrian walkway will be built at the site of the demolished illegal stalls along Jalan PJU1A/46 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
Road widening works will also take place near PPR Lembah Subang 1.
The demolition on Aug 20 involved 76 stalls, with some operating in the area for more than two decades.
Seri Setia assemblyman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the site had never been gazetted for trade as it had been designated as a four-lane road.
“The stalls were built over drains, which made maintenance impossible and caused frequent flooding in the PPR’s carpark whenever it rained,” he said.
On Aug 22, traders told StarMetro they were upset over the sudden demolition, as they had not been informed and had to rush to salvage their belongings.
Some complained that their food items and equipment had been damaged, while others said they were not given proper relocation plans.
Of the 38 traders, 17 have since applied to operate stalls at a new site.
“Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has prepared a proper site nearby with resurfaced roads and drainage, where traders can apply for licences and operate legally,” Fahmi said in a Facebook post after visiting the area.
“With the stalls cleared, MBPJ can now maintain the drains and widen the road.
“A new pedestrian walkway to the Lembah Subang LRT station will also be built to improve safety for residents.”
The state government, said Fahmi, was in discussions with Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) to redevelop PPR Lembah Subang 1 into modern housing, similar to projects in Kota Damansara.
“Our focus is not only on relocation, but on long-term planning to give residents a more orderly and comfortable living environment,” he added.
