FADED road markings outside several schools in Subang Jaya, Selangor, are putting students at risk, say concerned stakeholders.
Yellow zebra crossings near SMK Subang Jaya, SK Subang Jaya and SK Sri Subang Jaya in SS14 are barely visible, raising safety concerns for pedestrians and motorists alike.
Stakeholders are urging Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) to immediately repaint the markings.
SM Hasmah, 35, whose child goes to SMK Subang Jaya, was worried for her child’s safety due to the faded road markings.
“MBSJ should repaint the road markings and middle dividers as cars are also parking haphazardly along the roads at peak times.
“The faint lines can pose a danger to motorists.”
Social activist CP Goh, who is a SS14 resident, said the road lines needed to be clearly visible as it would otherwise make it difficult for drivers to discern lane boundaries especially during low-light conditions at dawn, dusk or during heavy rains.
“MBSJ should not wait for complaints. Regular inspections are needed, especially around schools.
“There are also many senior citizens who walk along Jalan SS14/6 and the surrounding neighbourhood,” he said, adding that areas around schools should be prioritised for repainting and resurfacing.
The SS14 area is sandwiched between New Pantai Expressway (NPE) to the north, Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) to the south, Persiaran Kewajipan to the east and Persiaran Jengka to the west.
Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said road markings guide motorists and these were crucial in school zones.
Lee said faded road markings stem from poor maintenance.
“Our weak maintenance culture inconveniences the public.
“Local councils are not doing the work properly and that creates safety risks for all road users,” he said.
MBSJ corporate and strategic management department director Muhammad Azli Miswan said the road markings in the SS14 area would be repainted pending completion of water pipe replacement works.
“Works to replace the ageing pipes are still being carried out.
“Air Selangor Sdn Bhd contractors will resurface the roads and the markings will be repainted after the project is fully completed in accordance with the conditions set by MBSJ,” he added.
