KAJANG Municipal Council (MPKj) has served KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) with fines of RM35,000 for poor service delivery.
This was based on a multitude of factors, including damaged roll-on, roll-off bins and malfunctioning lorry compactors, said MPKj president Nazli Md Taib at its full board meeting yesterday.
He did not discount that bad road conditions near Tanjung Dua Belas Sanitary Landfill were a contributing factor.
“However, malfunctioning compactor trucks will cease to be an issue after Aug 1 as we have entered into a new interim agreement with KDEB where their contractors will have to acquire new compactors,” said Nazli.
“We have also called for a meeting with KDEB to address these issues and they will come back to us with a plan of action.
“We have 360,000 assessment taxpayers. This means our waste management bill is also high.
“We pay KDEBWM up to RM12mil a year to manage our rubbish,” Nazli said.
“In addition, we also have many traditional villages like those in Dusun Tua that are under our purview, where rubbish collection is done on a corporate social responsibility basis (by KDEBWM).
“We will also be calling on chalet operators, glamping and camping sites as well as homestays to tell them that they will have to pay for rubbish management soon,” he added.
In his speech, MPKj councillor Ong Seng Peng pointed out that the cleaning of rubbish, mud and leaves from drains was another area that needed to be looked into, especially covered drains.
“We hope that in future, the waste management contractors will take this into account and budget for the availability of equipment to clear rubbish in closed drain systems.
“In addition, the budget for rubbish management should also include the installation of closed circuit TV cameras at hotspots to deter illegal dumping,” said Ong.
In anticipation of National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations, Nazli later presented sets of Malaysian flags to MPKj councillors.
