French fries fever in Bkt Bintang


McDonald’s XXL Fries being displayed on giant LED screens and digital panels at the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail, attracting the attention of onlookers.

A fast food chain celebrated International French Fry Day, which falls on July 11, by launching a time-limited double extra meal of deep-fried potato strips in the heart of Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur.

The event, which saw images of McDonald’s XXL Fries being displayed on giant LED screens and digital panels along the intersection of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail attracted the attention of onlookers who promptly whisked out their smartphones to capture the moment.

Marking the occasion was service staff from the Bukit Bintang restaurant carrying trays laden with double extra large red boxes to the front of the Bukit Bintang Monorail Station entrance, where passers-by were given free samples to try.

It so happened that a street band known as Genji Buskers was also playing there, livening the atmosphere with evergreen hits from a variety of musical genres.

Describing its latest French fry promotion, McDonald’s Malaysia chief marketing officer Chin Mei Lee called it a meal for fry fans, by fry fans.

“We know how much Malaysians love our fries.

“It’s never enough! That’s exactly what inspired the McDonald’s Fans Fries Meal.

“We wanted to create something truly memorable that brings people together over the one item they can never resist.

“Whether it’s with friends or family, this is our way of saying thank you and celebrating those joyful moments with everyone,” she said.

The double extra large serving of deep-fried Russet Burbank potato strips are made up of a large and a medium helping, amounting to 261g in weight.

A diner who had come to the Bukit Bintang restaurant to purchase a meal said she loved McDonald’s french fries.

“I enjoy them with a bit of salt,” she added.

Over the years, the fast food chain has honoured this global observance of the iconic and beloved snack in different ways.

In 2022, it collaborated with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to launch the McDonald’s Fries Crosswalk at the Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail intersection.

In 2023, it transformed Kuala Lumpur Tower into a French fry by illuminating the tower with golden, yellow lights.

The McDonald’s XXL size with Fans Fries Meal is available until July 13 for RM10.

The meal comes with a small drink and a small side of fries.

It is only available via dine-in and drive-through orders.
