CONTINUOUS heavy rain is creating anxiety among students and staff at SMK La Salle in Klang, Selangor.
This is because the drains outside the school off Persiaran Raja Muda Musa often overflow, with floodwater getting into the premises, reaching the canteen and corridors outside classrooms.
SMK La Salle Parent-Teacher Association chairman K. Jayandra said floods remained a perennial issue for the school.
“Whenever it rains heavily for 30 minutes or longer, the drains are unable to cope.
“Dried leaves, twigs and thick silt significantly impede water flow.

“Blockages in the drains that border the school field cause a back flow, with water spreading to the school grounds,” he said.
Jayandra said drains outside the school needed to be cleaned up thoroughly, and urged Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) to do so as soon as possible.
“Most of our teachers believe that cleaning up the drains and removing blockages will resolve the flood issue,” he said.
Jayandra said addressing the flood issue was crucial to safeguard the educational environment and well-being of students, teachers and workers.
He added that students had to walk through flooded corridors to get to their classes and this was a health and safety concern.
He is also worried that the situation could get worse and disrupt academic activities.
MBDK Environmental Services Department director Zaireezal Ahmad Zainuddin, when contacted, said the drainage network was under the supervision of KDEB Waste Management cleaning contractors.
“MBDK will instruct workers in charge of the area to remove the rubbish, silt and other debris in the drain for a smooth flow of surface runoff,” he added.
