SOME 42 underprivileged families in Taiping, Perak, received financial aid to help them celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

The aid was presented to them by Muslim Progressive Association president Mohaideen Ishak after an iftar programme at Masjid India in Jalan Kota.

The recipients included single mothers, widows and the hardcore poor.

Mohaideen, who was president of the mosque for 48 years, said the association had been helping the underprivileged since it was established about 60 years ago.

“We previously gave the recipients items such as rice, milk, sugar, flour and other groceries, but now we have decided to give them cash aid so that they can purchase what they really need,” he said.

Also present were mosque president Datuk Dr Nizam Abdullah and mosque trustee KM Farook Ibrahim.

Mohaideen said each family received between RM400 and RM500, while those with more children took home RM600.

He said the association had also been giving cash to students from poor families who did well in public examinations.

He said the students each received RM1,500.

Mohaideen, who is a mosque trustee, also pledged to personally give RM5,000 to the mosque for renovation works, while the association would give RM3,000.
