MELAKA: Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has continued its streak of excellence in sustainable energy management by bagging the National Energy Award (NEA) 2024 in the Energy Management in Large Building category.
The NEA 2024 was organised by the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry and the presentation of UTeM’s award was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof at the NEA Appreciation Ceremony 2024, which was held at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, recently.
Representing UTeM at the event were Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Ts Dr Massila Kamalrudin and Director of the Smart Environment Centre, Associate Professor Dr Musthafah Mohd Tahir who received a trophy, a certificate of excellence and cash prize of RM40,000.
When interviewed, Prof Massila said the achievement solidifies UTeM’s position among higher education institutions to win the NEA twice, having previously secured the victory in the NEA 2021.
She said that this remarkable achievement reflects UTeM’s ongoing commitment to becoming a regional leader in sustainable energy management, while also supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
"This initiative focuses on two key SDGs: SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production),” she said on Sunday (March 2).
Prof Massila noted that the factors behind UTeM’s success was through developing its own formula, including the strategic adaptation of the Sustainable Energy Management System under the Asean Energy Management Scheme (AEMAS).
"This system has been customised and integrated into the university’s management framework, complemented by innovative and effective energy management practices.
"UTeM previously strategised clear energy management planning, coupled with collective efforts from the entire UTeM community in implementing energy efficiency initiatives," she added.
