AN additional 30 mobile closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed to beef up security in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon said this would bring the number of such cameras in the city to 86.

He said Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) would rent the CCTV cameras for 36 months, at an estimated cost of RM1.7mil.

CCTV technology, he added, was developing very rapidly and MBPJ was opting to rent, with all upgrade and maintenance costs included.

The cameras will be installed in 27 locations.

“The mobile CCTV system can help MBPJ provide better services and improve safety in the city,” he said during MBPJ’s full board meeting yesterday.

Mohamad Zahri said three cameras were slated for MBPJ’s abandoned vehicle depot in SS7, and two for Taman Rakyat Damai Setia in Damansara Damai.

“The remaining 25 locations, such as Jalan SS20/21, Seapark police station and Uptown Kota Damansara, will each get one mobile CCTV camera.

“Besides crime and vandalism, CCTV will be used to monitor vagrants, illegal dumping and natural disasters,” he added.

In December last year, it was reported that MBPJ had placed eight cameras at illegal dumping hotspots to complement the existing 19 mobile CCTV cameras in those locations.

On a separate matter, Mohamad Zahri said MBPJ would support Selangor government in its hosting of Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026.

He said MBPJ’s facilities might be used for sporting events including hockey, squash, rugby, tennis and football.

“These proposals are still in the early stages and subject to change.

“The broken tracks in Stadium MBPJ in Kelana Jaya will also be repaired to accommodate the opening and closing ceremonies of Para Sukma 2026, if they are held there,” said Mohamad Zahri.

He was responding to reports quoting Selangor youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi who said Stadium MBPJ might be used as venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of Para Sukma 2026.

Meanwhile, Sepang International Circuit was being considered for Sukma 2026’s opening and closing ceremonies, according to Mohd Najwan.

A total of 28 sporting events will be contested at Sukma 2026 while 10 events will be contested in Para Sukma 2026.
