THE roof at the Chinatown market in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur, will be replaced this year.
The project is among many upgrading and beautification works set to be undertaken by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) in the area.
DBKL advisory board member Andre Lai said the tender process for the roof project had been completed.
“The work is scheduled to start later this year but I cannot reveal the details yet,” he said when asked by the media.
Lai said various other facility upgrades and measures were also underway as part of preparations for the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.
He was speaking to the media after accompanying Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif and Petaling Street Rukun Tetangga chairman Datuk Chan Kwok Chin during a visit to the area in the run-up to Chinese New Year on Jan 29.
Maimunah said DBKL would collaborate with the private sector to transform the area’s back lanes.
She said more artworks such as sculptures and murals would be added to convert such spots into creative spaces.
There are also plans to upgrade the walkway around nearby Plaza Rakyat LRT to improve accessibility, she added.
Maimunah also went on a walkabout and distributed oranges to traders and customers.
She thanked the traders for observing cleanliness in the popular tourist spot and hoped this would be maintained.
Commenting on the lion dance which welcomed her, Maimunah said it was her first time viewing the performance live since her return to Malaysia from her overseas stint.
“It brought back memories of my late in-laws, with whom I used to celebrate the festivities in Ipoh,” she added.
