THE Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor and Federal Territories (SCAS&FT) has raised over RM1mil during its Chinese New Year celebrations.

The funds will go towards the construction of its new building, Bangunan Sultan Idris Shah, which will cost RM30mil and built beside the existing building, said SCAS&FT’s president Datuk Hong Yee Keong.

The proposed new building will have seven storeys and an underground carpark.

SCAS&FT supports persons with cerebral palsy through various free services and programmes, from as young as five and up to 50 years.

“Currently, the association has a special education school, vocational training sheltered workshop and a rehabilitation centre,” said Hong.

He said the association’s monthly overhead cost amounted to RM160,000.

SCAS&FT received a RM500,000 donation from Sunway Group for the building fund.

Another RM500,000 from an anonymous donor was presented by HRC Holdings Pte Ltd general manager and SCAS&FT board member Datuk Micheal Leow.

Datuk Dr Teong Teck Lai donated RM80,000 towards the association’s upkeep, while Selangor Turf Club chairman Tan Sri Richard Cham Hak Lim and Puan Sri Louise Cham presented a RM50,000 donation from Equine SMG Sdn Bhd.

Further funds came from the Happy, Love & Care Charity Group which donated RM20,000.

SCAS&FT board member and event organising committee chairman Datuk Jerry Ching said this year’s theme, “Diversity and Inclusion, Delivering Hope” underscored the association’s mission of spreading kindness and compassion to ensure every child felt embraced by the community.

“To deepen public awareness, we organised a classroom tour to give guests a glimpse into the children’s life while here.

“This allowed our guests to witness their determination, thus fostering a deeper appreciation of the children’s spirit.

“Every step requires immense dedication and effort, and behind their perseverance is a limitless well of hope and potential,” said Ching.

Referring to Chinese New Year as a time for renewal and aspirations, he said that by equipping the students with knowledge and skills, SCAS&FT helped them integrate into society, achieve independence and pave the way for a brighter future.

During the fundraiser held at the Dewan Teong Kim Cai of Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah in Petaling Jaya, the association’s students took part in a percussion performance, lion dance and traditional lou sang ceremony.
