FIVE years after a devastating fire razed their wooden homes in Kampung Baru Karak, Pahang, 48 families returned to a rebuilt neighbourhood just in time for Chinese New Year.

The residents received keys to their new three-bedroom, two-bathroom houses, marking a fresh start after years of displacement and uncertainty.

Many spent the last five years staying with relatives or friends while construction was underway.

Retiree Wa Soon Kiong, 66, said returning now was especially meaningful, allowing his family to celebrate the festive season under their own roof.

This sentiment was echoed by Saras, 67, who said having her own space again has restored a sense of dignity and comfort that was lost in the blaze.

This homecoming was made possible through a 2021 pledge of support, backed by leaders like Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek, Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy and Tan Sri Liow Tiong Lai alongside developer FBG Holdings Bhd.

The significance of the milestone was further highlighted by a visit from Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

Observing the transformation of the Chinese new village, Sultan Abdullah expressed joy at seeing the victims of the 2021 blaze finally settled in permanent homes.
