DEVELOPMENT projects worth RM123mil were approved for Dudong in Sibu, Sarawak, from 2020 to 2024.

Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong said the projects included the upgrading of Jalan Pulau Dudong (7.6km tar-sealed road) at a cost of RM40mil.

He said this was approved under the mid-term review of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), supported by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg on Nov 14, 2022.

“Additionally, RM200,000 was allocated to each of the 15 rural national schools in Dudong for repairs and upgrades in November 2021.

“Construction of SMK Dudong, estimated at RM30mil, was approved under the 2022 Budget.

“Similarly, construction of SK Dudong, also estimated at RM30mil, was approved in 2025 Budget in November 2024,” he said in a press conference during a joint Dudong and Sibujaya SUPP mobile service programme.

Wong, who is also Dudong SUPP chairman, said RM12mil in housing loans from Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (HDC) was approved to improve living conditions in 22 longhouses.

He added that RM1.26mil was secured through Dudong SUPP’s collaboration with Lee Foundation and other donors to construct a new dormitory for Citizen Middle School, a Chinese independent school destroyed by fire in October 2020.

“We have also obtained RM5.8mil to construct Durin Community and Cultural Centre, approved under the 12MP mid-term review.

“Wan Ming Methodist Church and Ta Wang Kong Temple received RM1mil and RM250,000, respectively, from the Unit for Other Religions.”

Looking ahead, Wong hoped for an Olympic-class swimming pool in Sibujaya.

He extended his gratitude to Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian and SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai for their support in implementing the projects.
