SIXTY schools in Sibu, Sarawak, have received storybooks contributed by the Sibu MP’s service centre.

This initiative under the “I Love Reading Programme” aims to encourage reading among students and enhance the collections of school libraries.

The first handover ceremony of the storybooks took place at SJK (C) Su Lai, marking the start of the book distribution.

Speaking at the programme’s launch, Sibu MP Oscar Ling stressed the importance of instilling good reading habits in students, particularly those overly reliant on smartphones.

He urged them to put aside their devices and immerse themselves in books to gain valuable knowledge.

He also warned against excessive phone use and gaming, which could disrupt reading time, harm eyesight and affect attention span.

“The primary goal is to help students shift their content outlets and cultivate a love for reading,” said Ling.

He said that through reading, they could acquire knowledge, improve literacy and develop creative thinking.

Quoting a proverb that says “There is a house of gold in books and beauty like jade in books”, Ling highlighted the transformative power of reading.

He emphasised how reading broadened horizons, enhanced literacy and inspired logical reasoning and creativity in students.

Ling also called on parents to play an active role in cultivating their children’s reading habits.

“Parents must guide their children to develop a balanced routine, prioritising reading and learning over excessive screen time,” he added.

As part of the Madani Government’s “Program Mesra Rakyat” initiative, funds have also been allocated to improve teaching equipment in schools, according to Ling.

SJK (C) Su Lai, for example, received funds for a 3.6m by 2m LED screen to enhance students’ learning experience.

The MP said this programme underscored his commitment to supporting education and nurturing future leaders.

By enriching school libraries and promoting a reading culture, Ling hopes to inspire students to explore books, ultimately contributing to their academic success and personal growth. ― By ANDY CHUA
