A GROUP of former Convent Holy Infant Jesus (now known as SMK Main Convent) students got together in Ipoh, Perak, to celebrate over five decades of friendship.

Organising chairman Veronica Sammy said 47 alumni came from as far as the United Kingdom and the United States to attend the event.

“Some had never met each other since they left school.

“It was good to see so many of us return to our hometown to celebrate our 70th birthday year together,” she added.

Veronica said this was their third reunion, with the first one held more than 20 years ago in Melbourne, Australia.

“Twelve of us attended. We had our second one in Ipoh with about 70 old girls,” she said.

She added that many of them stayed in touch through WhatsApp, which made organising the gathering easier.

They decided to hold the latest reunion, on Sept 28, in Ipoh to coincide with the Old Michaelians Association’s annual dinner, which was attended by several husbands of the Convent alumni.

Veronica said the date also coincided with the actual birthdays of two old girls.

“Shamsiah Mohd Daud is still in Ipoh while Patricia Teh now resides in the UK.”

A highlight was the singing of the school anthem together.

“Some remembered the words better than others,” Veronica quipped.

She was glad many former students took the opportunity to return to their roots in Ipoh to celebrate their schooldays.
