THERE will be a partial road closure along Jalan Kebun Bunga in George Town for around 20 months to make way for the Penang Hill cable car project.
Kebun Bunga assemblyman Lee Boon Heng said the partial closure will take place from Tuesday (Oct 15) until June 30, 2026.
"This is to allow construction works on the Penang Hill Cable Car project," he said on Thursday (Oct 10).
"The public is advised to adhere to the Traffic Management Plan and exercise caution during this period.
"The plan outlines the traffic flow and management for the construction activities.
“Visitors to the Penang Botanic Gardens are encouraged to park at designated areas instead of along Jalan Kebun Bunga," he added.
Lee said visitors can take a brief walk from the designated parking areas to the gardens, which will remain open during the project period.
“There are other nearby parks as well, such as Gurney Bay and Penang City Park, where visitors can enjoy outdoor activities,” he added.
A temporary roundabout will be constructed and traffic controllers will be stationed to assist with vehicle flow along Jalan Kebun Bunga.
"A temporary hawker centre has been set up to accommodate traders from the Penang Botanic Gardens hawker complex," he said.
Lee shared that the gardens receives around 3,000 visitors on weekdays and up to 6,000 visitors on weekends.
It was reported that the partial closure will start from the intersection of Jalan Kebun Bunga and Lorong Air Terjun, before the Park Avenue apartments.
During the period, heavy vehicles will be using Jalan Kebun Bunga and the Jeep Track during non-peak hours on weekdays from 10am to noon and 2.30pm to 4pm.
The Penang Hill Cable Car project is being built in partnership between Penang Hill Corporation and Hartasuma Sdn Bhd through a public-private partnership with Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbHfor, an Austria-based ropeway maker providing the cable car system.
The 2.7km cable car line with three stations is valued at RM245mil.
