NGO appeals for more time to vacate government land in Setiawangsa

The NGO has been asked to vacate the land in Taman Setiawangsa as DBKL is planning to develop a park and sports facility in the area.

A NON-GOVERNMENTAL organisation (NGO) based in Setiawangsa, Kuala Lumpur, which received a 14-day notice to vacate government-owned land, is appealing for an extension.

Insaf Malaysia has until Oct 14 to move out from Lot 30528 in Jalan Setiawangsa 8A, Taman Setiawangsa, which is located behind its headquarters.

The NGO, which provides aid to orphanages and low-income households in Klang Valley, stores dry food at the premises.

There is also a cooking area for workers to prepare food, which is donated to the needy.

He added that a meeting was held on Sept 30 involving representatives from DBKL, Federal Territories Land and Mines Office (PTGWPKL), Setiawangsa parliamentary office and the police.

“I was informed that DBKL has approved a plan to build a park and sports facility at the site and we have to vacate.

“However, 14 days is too short. Insaf will write to DBKL for a six-month extension,” he told StarMetro.

He said Insaf had used the site for six years.

“Initially, it was an empty lot strewn with rubbish and infested with pests, so we cleaned it up.

“The land belonged to PTGWPKL. Insaf asked to rent it but the request was turned down.

“A few years later, the land office issued a notice saying that ownership had been transferred to DBKL.”

Ishak said he has forwarded the matter to Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Nik Nazmi and DBKL have yet to respond to requests for comments at press time.
