Ocean paddling festival boosts sports tourism

Pahang government is promoting sports tourism to attract domestic and international tourists.

State unity, tourism and culture committee chairman Leong Yu Man said her committee was working via Tourism Pahang to strengthen cooperation with external agencies.

She said this would help boost the promotion of interesting places in Pahang.

An example of the result of this teamwork was the Pahang International Ocean Paddling Festival 2024, which took place from Sept 20 to 22.

“This effort can indirectly ensure that Pahang’s tourism industry is always thriving, in addition to the state being one of the main tourist destinations in Malaysia,” she told Bernama.

The paddling festival, which took place over three days at Cherating Beach in Kuantan, saw eight countries participating in canoe ocean racing.

Besides Malaysia, there were teams from Thailand, South Africa, the United States, Hong Kong, China, Indonesia and Singapore.

Meanwhile, Leong said canoe polo was also a great activity to promote Pahang as an international sports tourism destination.

“By taking advantage of the popularity of this sport among Asian countries, Pahang has the potential to become the main arena that attracts tourists and canoeists from all over the world,” she said.
