A MALAYSIAN contingent of 94 students returned home with 151 awards from the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (Simoc) 2024.

The accolades won by Team Malaysia included 22 gold, 39 silver, 66 bronze and 24 honourable mentions.

Two Malaysian students achieved distinctions in the Top Three Special Awards.

Gan Lih Ying, a Grade 9 student, emerged as the overall runner-up while Chuah Zhe-Hern, a Grade 11 student from Kolej Permata @ Pintar Negara UKM, Selangor, secured the position of overall 2nd runner-up.

Simoc is an annual competition that fosters intellectual curiosity and excellence among young mathematicians worldwide.

Participants engage in three rounds – Math Olympiad, Math Warrior and Mind Sports Challenge – each designed to test various aspects of their mathematical capabilities, from problem-solving and logical reasoning to teamwork and quick thinking.

Team Malaysia’s triumphs were particularly notable in the Math Olympiad round, where they clinched 11 gold, 15 silver and 21 bronze medals.

Their success extended to the Math Warrior and Mind Sports Challenge rounds, garnering 17 gold, 29 silver and 48 bronze medals.

In addition to their awards, Team Malaysia winners earned scholarship points, granting them the opportunity to participate in the Young Leadership Camp in China.

This camp aims to nurture future leaders by providing them with a platform to further develop their skills.

The event saw participation from 2,300 students representing 30 countries, including Azerbaijan, Turkiye, Indonesia, Cambodia, India, Laos and Mexico.
