M’sians bag multiple awards in Olympiads

MALAYSIAN students are making their mark internationally.

In the recently concluded Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) 2020, SJK (C) Jalan Davidson, Kuala Lumpur Year Five pupil Chai Feng Ze beat 1,127 participants from 16 countries to be crowned the sole perfect scorer.

His schoolmate Brandon Choo Sze How, 11, and SJK (C) Puay Chai’s Ho Janson, 10, were the overall runners-up in their respective categories.

The SIMOC 2020 is a Mathematics competition which tests students’ ability to solve mathematical problems on paper, their ability to work as a team to play interactive mathematical games and to solve puzzles.

The competition was held online on Oct 24 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Singapore Maths and Olympiad (SMO) Education Group said SIMOC 2020 comprised three events; the Math Olympiad, Mind Sports Challenge and Math MasterMind Competition.

“Team Malaysia bagged a total of 201 awards; 70 from the Math Olympiad event, 64 from Mind Sports Challenge and 67 from Math MasterMind Competition.

“The team did extremely well despite the pandemic.

“We want to thank the teachers, parents and students for their support in our work in promoting the interest and enthusiasm of Malaysian students towards Mathematics and problem solving.

“We want to give more students the opportunity to go on an international stage, and to discover, encourage and challenge them to greater heights, ” it said in a statement.

Separately, a group of six talented students chalked up an impressive win at the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad 2020 (TIMO) final.

The students beat 1,464 others from 14 countries who competed online on Sept 27.

Aged between seven and sixteen, the students clinched 13 gold, 23 silver, 13 bronze, four world stars, one overall champion, one second runner-up, as well as seven merit awards.

Each of them received a trophy and free entry to the TIMO 2021 final.

TIMO is an annual international Olympiad competition organised by Olympiad Champion Education Group from Hong Kong.

All TIMO gold award winners will be invited to attend the World International Mathematical Olympiad (WIMO), fully sponsored by WIMO Foundation.

All WIMO participants will get the opportunity to attend a 10 hour intensive training course and learn from highly experienced Math Olympiad trainers and examiners.
