Placemaking strategies will be used to weed out KL’s red-light areas, says Zaliha

PLACEMAKING strategies are part of the plan to weed out red-light areas in Kuala Lumpur.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said they would identify the locations and look into adding value to the area with better local economic activities.

“This has been done in Surabaya, a place that was known for prostitution activities.

“Now, it is free from such activities and has become a tourist attraction.

“We can learn from that transformation,” she said at a press conference after the launch of Kuala Lumpur ESG Centre at Plaza The Exchange TRX.

She also said that special multi-agency unit KL Strike Force, which comprises Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Federal Territories Department, police, Immigration Department he Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Customs Department, will be looking into the matter.
