THOSE with respiratory illnesses will now be separated from other patients, thanks to the completion of a respiratory unit at the Jalan Oya Health Clinic in Sibu, Sarawak.

The unit costing RM150,000 was constructed at the previous carpark of the clinic.

Construction started in November 2023 and was completed in April this year.

The addition serves as an isolation and screening unit for patients with cough and flu as well as those seeking follow-up treatment for tuberculosis.

“This unit can help prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses at the clinic by isolating infected patients until they can be adequately screened and diagnosed,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.

He said the Jalan Oya Health Clinic was seeing an average of 1,000 patients per day, making it one of the busiest in Sibu city.

“As such, preventing the spread of respiratory diseases is of paramount importance to safeguard the people,” he said when opening the unit. Chieng noted the Jalan Oya Health Clinic receives between 20 and 30 tuberculosis patients daily.

Sibu Division Health Department officer Dr Teh Jo Hun commended Chieng for making the respiratory unit possible through his Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund.
