DBKL expects RM2mil a year in revenue from charging foreigners for GoKL bus services

THE implementation of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) GoKL bus service charges for foreigners is expected to bring in RM2mil in revenue a year.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh said that based on statistics, 46% of the passengers taking the buses are foreigners

"From the statistics, we can expect RM2mil of collections a year.

"This is part of the revenue generating measures to bolster the increased expenses in DBKL's 2024 budget.

"We hope that the collection will also fund the bus operation and maintenance cost," he said, while unveiling DBKL's budget at Menara DBKL 1, Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur.

While the mayor did not specify the numbers of passengers, previous reports quote DBKL recording 30,000 passengers daily and about 918,000 monthly passengers using GoKL services.

The charges would be implemented in stages for the four GoKL bus lines, namely Green, Purple, Red and Blue.

Kamarulzaman added that aside from the GoKL bus charges, DBKL would also implement fee charges on the services they provide as well as enhancing arrears collection to increase its revenue.

DBKL announced its 2024 budget totalling at RM2.66bil, about RM60mil or 2.13% increase from last year's budget.

This also resulted in a slight bump in allocation for two core categories namely management and development.

Management expenses took the bulk of it at RM2.01bil (75.6%) while development expenses is at RM650mil (24.4%).
