Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) in Sarawak can now carry out more traffic enforcement work following the purchase of four motorcycles.

Ten traffic wardens have completed their training at the Police Training Centre (Pulapor) in Kuching and they will be patrolling Sibu town on motorcycles.

SMC chairman Clarence Ting said, “By using the motorcycles, our enforcement team can cover more places.

“Before this, we had 44 enforcement officers and only two vans to help them patrol the streets. We could not cover much ground.”

He said the motorcycles would later be equipped with sirens.

“The traffic wardens (including enforcement officers) have the power to issue compounds to errant motorists,” he said.

He added that the local council would also ask for more vans.

Meanwhile, SMC enforcement team chief Frankie Jampi said that more people would be sent for training to be traffic wardens.

“We will be writing to the Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

“We will deploy the additional personnel to hotspot areas,” he said.

Separately, he said 2,733 compound notices had been issued so far this year for illegal parking.

The offence carries a fine of RM150.
