Old-school vibes at speakeasy in TTDI

There’s a new retro bar in Kuala Lumpur, adding to the landscape of Taman Tun Dr Ismail along the Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi belt which is home to a few bars and clubs.

Scandalous TTDI enters as a neighbourhood retro exclusive bar and club which plays only music videos.

Since it opened last December, Scandalous has been carving out a niche as arguably the only retro club in the Klang Valley and Malaysia that specialises in music videos from the 1980s, 1990s and selected current hits over the last four decades.

The name Scandalous itself is from a similarly named favourite track of the venue’s owners from the early mid-2000s, popularised by British R&B trio Mis-Teeq.

When you walk in from the entrance on the ground floor, the place can seem unassuming at first.

It is sign-posted so it is not difficult to find.

Heading up the stairs, you enter an elongated space with the bar first before seeing giant video screens broadcasting music videos.

The music and accompanying videos are the key here, primarily catering to the retro concept with R&B, hip hop, new wave and pop music being the main focus.

Theme nights run from Mondays Retro Chill, Tuesdays 80s and 90s, Wednesdays Ladies Nite with free drinks for ladies and Thursday Mambo Jumbo to Fridays Retro Power and Saturdays R&B, hip hop and more.

VDJ Rain is the resident video DJ from Tuesdays to Saturdays, with Fridays and Saturdays the more obvious busy nights.

For accompanying drinks, the liquor inventory is quite impressive, though the selection is not extensive.

Besides beer promos with Heineken Malaysia, it offers twin bottle promotions for its gin, vodka and whiskey bottles.

Over in the liquor department, whiskey, and especially the malt whiskey selections, look impressive with more than a dozen varieties and ages available from favourites like Glenfiddich and Macallan to Dalmore, Glenmorangie and more.

There’s more than a good selection of bottle gins as well.

Premium picks are Darnley’s, Sorgin and Portobello Road No 171, among others, and there are vodkas on offer too.

There’s also a good selection of your all-time cocktail classics and shooters that make up the drinks menu.

So if you’re in for a Long Island, margarita, AK47 or Kamizake kick for the evening, they’re on the menu, along with a dozen more.

As for the food department, having its own Indian fusion kitchen which is open till midnight is certainly a plus. It serves small dishes and bar bites.

The peratal selection of mutton and wild boar certainly looks and tastes delectable enough, while the rest of the bites menu appear good enough to accompany the array of drinks available as well as the music.

To top it all off, the owners say the outlet is equipped with a high-tech Covid-buster device that claims to neutralise the Coronavirus family of viruses.

The outlet has also been soundproofed to give its neighbours peace of mind during the dance and clubbing nights.
