Tithe set at RM7 for Muslims in state

THE Sarawak State Mufti Department has set the zakat (tithe) rate this year at RM7 per person.

Tabung Baitumal Sarawak (TBS) general manager Datu Mej (R) Abg Mohd Shibli Abg Mohd Nailie (pic) said various payment methods had been provided for Muslims.

“These include paying at all TBS counters and through 783 amil (collectors) throughout the state.

“Zakat can also be paid online through the ‘Baitulmal Kamek’ portal, TBS app and online banking,” he said at a press conference in Sarawak Sibu Islamic Complex.

He noted that while some states had three rates, Sarawak had decided to set only one.

Abg Mohd Shibli said RM5.7mil was collected through zakat last year.

“This year, we are aiming to collect RM6mil.

“There will be a slight increase because when a family becomes bigger, they have to pay zakat for each new member,” he said.

On the “Asnaf Together Day” in Sibu, Abg Mohd Shibli said various activities were held.

They included a back-to-school programme involving 160 beneficiaries, Kasih Kenyalang assistance (140 beneficiaries) and others involving a total expenditure of RM74,800.

“This is the second time we had it in Sibu. We have also held it in Kuching and Miri,” he said.

Also present were TBS deputy general manager Sulaiman Mahili, its Sibu division head Siti Azliyani Jasini and other senior officials.
