Sungai Buaya settlers in the dark over their land status

A TOTAL of 363 Felda settlers who were given land in Kampung Sungai Buaya, Rawang in Selangor, in 2009, say they are in the dark as there has been no response from the state government or land office about the status of their plots.

The settlers were given 189.27ha for agricultural purpose as compensation after the Selangor government acquired their land for development.

In April 2018, then mentri besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali presented them with the titles for the land which up to that point had been cultivated on temporary occupation licences (TOL).

Settler Rosli Busu, 57, said: “Many of us have cultivated the land. Some even built houses on the plots.”

But upon checking the land status with the Hulu Selangor District Office, the settlers were shocked to find that there had been changes to the locations of their lots.

“The new plan showed that some of the settlers were allocated land in other areas nearby while others were not given lots at all.

“We lodged a police report at the Serendah police station on Sept 28, 2020, and even sent a letter to the Selangor Mentri Besar on July 27, 2020, but received no response,’’ said Rosli.

Another settler Datuk Nagoor Sahlan, 65, who built a house on an oil palm estate, said he had made attempts to meet the Hulu Selangor district officer but to no avail and no one from the land office informed them about the situation.

“Our queries are simple. We want to know the status of the land.

“Why is there a new location map which shows other people as the owners of the land that we have cultivated over the years?” he questioned.

Saidin Busu was also furious over changes in the location map.

The Felda settler said a large chunk of land, around 40ha, was now missing from their combined plots which they had already spent time and effort clearing for development.

Another settler Sa’ad Busu, 58, said he hoped that whoever was elected as Hulu Selangor MP in the 15th General Election would be able to resolve this issue.
