Evening rain brings flash floods to parts of Kapar

Flood water inundated the commercial area of Taman Emas, Kapar.

RAIN on Thursday (Nov 10) evening rain has turned roads in parts of Kapar into streams of rushing water, with pupils at a primary school wading in ankle-deep water as teachers usher them out of their classrooms.

Kapar MCA chairman Datuk Song Kee Chai said flash floods had caused much anxiety among residents of Taman Insan Jaya 1. However, the rain stopped before the floodwater could enter their homes, said Song.

VP Sevelinggam, an independent candidate for Kapar, said eight housing areas were flooded in ankle-deep water due to clogged drains.

The eight housing areas are Taman Emas, Intan, Ria, Aman, Alam Nyata, Putra and Taman Saga.

In Taman Emas, water in the commercial area was just below knee level while the main road of Jalan Abdul Manan saw several cars stalling in floodwaters.

According to the Kapar Fire and Rescue Department, flash floods that hit certain parts of Kapar affected Persiaran Hamzah Alang, Jalan Kasban, Jalan Kenangan, Taman Daya, Jalan Khamis, Jalan Jabar and SMK Meru.

Flash floods were at 0.3m and waters had receded at 4.30pm in most areas and no evacuation was carried out. The Kapar Fire and Rescue Department was assisted by the Sungai Pinang Fire and Rescue Department.

Song said although the effects of the North-eastern monsoon and hide tide phenomena are unavoidable, certain measures to minimise flooding can be taken such as better maintenance of drains as well as upgrades to widen them.
