SHAH ALAM: There needs to be an overlapping resource of energy to ensure continuous electrical power supply in the country, says Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

The Selangor Mentri Besar said this was important to tackle future challenges and to ensure there is backup of power supply.

“The LRT and MRT need sufficient electrical supply.

“That's why we justified the decision to pull the grid from outside areas.

“This is all to meet the very high needs and demands for power supply in the Klang Valley,” he said at the launch of the Selangor 2022 Halal Voucher programme at the State Secretariat building here on Thursday (July 28).

The event was organised by the state government under its Halal Industry Standing Committee.

Amirudin said he has yet to receive a detailed report from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) about Wednesday (July 27) afternoon’s power outage that affected various areas in Klang Valley and other states.

“Power supply has been restored in the affected areas.

“We found that in Cyberjaya, tech companies especially lacked about 22 to 27 megawatts to meet the sufficient needs.

“I believe TNB will conduct a study on the estimation of losses (suffered by businesses) but until then, I will not jump to conclusions,” he added.

The major power outage at around 1pm on Wednesday caused malfunctioning traffic lights resulting in gridlocks and accidents, while homes and businesses were blacked out, with some office towers and factories losing all power.

TNB had said the source of the disruption was traced to a fault at its Yong Peng North substation in Johor. Power was restored to all affected regions by 3.02pm Wednesday.

The disruption caused a loss of 2.2 gigawatts, which is 10% of demand in Peninsular Malaysia.
