Klang Municipal Council (MPK) will carry out an exercise to issue licences for dogs that are three months or older in six neighbourhoods starting tomorrow.
MPK Health Department director Azmi Muji said the annual licence cost RM10 and came with a dog tag.
“This is an outreach effort where counters will be set up in housing areas from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays in June and July.
“MPK will record details of the dog, offer advice on responsible pet ownership and the importance of vaccination,” he said, adding that the initiative would kick off in Taman Berkeley.
The other housing estates are Taman Petaling Indah (June 11), Taman Klang Jaya (June 18), Taman Sentosa (June 25), Bandar Bukit Raja (July 16) and Kapar (July 23).
Azmi said dog tags were important in differentiating licensed dogs from unlicensed ones.
“We had a case where a brown-coloured dachshund had run off and taken by someone.
“But within an hour of investigations, we found the dog, noticed its dog tag and upon verification, the animal was returned to the rightful owner.
“So, tags are crucial,” he said.
Azmi said owners bringing their dogs to be licensed had to show proof that their pets had been vaccinated by producing the vaccination card.
“These six residential areas were identified as they have the highest number of pet dogs, based on our observation.
“MPK plans to build a dog ownership list of each neighbourhood,” he said.
He added that dog owners were also required to bring along a copy of their MyKad, a coloured photo of their dog or dogs and the old licence certificate (for those applying for renewal).
