Authorities brace for possible flash floods in Selangor coastal areas from rain and high tide

COASTAL areas in Selangor stretching from Sabak Bernam to Kuala Langat are on alert as authorities have been told to prepare for flash floods if the high tide coincides with heavy rain.

Fire and Rescue Department Sungai Pinang Station operations chief Shaharil Mohamad Hassan said, however, the high tide phenomenon appeared under control as the seas were calm and there was no rain along coastal areas.

“Even later tonight (Thursday, Feb 3) at 8.05pm, the tide is expected to be at 5.1m and we expect no intense rains.

"Since Feb 1, it did rain but far inside, in Gombak, Petaling and Shah Alam, away from the coastal stretch,” he said.

Shaharil added that at 8.39pm on Friday (Feb 4), the tide will be at 5m and dip to 4.9m at 9.08pm on Saturday (Feb 5).

“On Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb 1 and 2), the high tide was under control as there was no rain or strong wind.

"We hope the same tame affair goes on. Based on the nature of the waves, we see it as not aggressive,” he added.

According to the National Hydrographic Centre in Port Klang, the high tide phenomenon is also forecast at Kuala Muda in Kedah, Bagan Datuk in Perak and Batu Pahat and Pontian in Johor.

Fishermen and those going out to sea have been advised to be cautious at all times.
