Useful gifts to cultivate sports among students

IN a move to further boost sports among students and cultivate a healthy lifestyle, 10 schools in Raub, Pahang, were each given a ping pong table.

A simple handover ceremony was held in the presence of Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, who was instrumental in the initiative.

The schools are SM Dato Shahbandar Hussain, SM Chung Ching, SM Agama Al Falah Batu Talam, SK Felda Krau 1, SK Bandar Raub, SK Raub Jaya, SJK (C) Sg Lui, SJK (C) Yuh Hwa, SJK (C) Sang Lee and SJK (C) Cheroh.

Ti said schools were a good platform to produce future athletes to replace the current sports talents in the country.

“We need to search, identify and train more sportsmen and sportswomen and schools are the perfect avenue to kickstart this effort.

“These potential talents need to be nurtured over the years before they can start to excel and represent the state and country, both in Malaysian and international championships,” he said.

Ti, who is also MCA vice- president, said the ministry would also continue to draft more programmes and activities for youths to develop their leadership and oratory skills as the next echelon of leaders.

Later, Ti had a friendly ping pong match with Raub district education officer Nor Ahmad Abdul Rahim to show off their skills in the game.

In a separate event, Ti handed over a disinfectant spray machine with liquid, face masks and biodegradable bags to students of SJK (C) Sang Lee as the school had submitted a request to him for the items.

He said a ping pong table was also given to the school so that students from the outskirts, including from the Orang Asli community, would enjoy similar facilities and attention as their peers in urban areas.

Ti also met officials and players of the handball team from SMJK Chung Ching who represented the district and Pahang.

He spent some time to motivate the team and urged them to continue pushing their limits to bring glory and fame to the school and state.

Six of the team members are being identified to join the national team. Ti has pledged to provide assistance for them to shine.
