THE Technical Committee Meeting has not fixed a deadline yet to finalise the Memorandum of Understanding on Recruitment and Placement of Indonesian Domestic Workers (MoU PDI) in Malaysia.
Indonesian consul-general in Penang Bambang Suharto, however, hoped that the MoU could be finalised soon so that the issue of PDIs could be settled.
He said among the issues being discussed were the one-channel system, one maid-one task concept, domestic workers’ salaries and issues related to the welfare, health and protection of Indonesian migrant workers in the country.
The MoU PDI was signed for the first time on May 13, 2006, in Bali, and subsequently, the Protocol to Amend the MoU PDI was signed on May 31, 2011, in Bandung – which expired on May 30, 2016.
Suharto said the integration of the one-channel system was also important to enable both countries to monitor and facilitate the protection of Indonesian workers.
“We also hope that the Malaysian government can abolish the direct hiring and contract renewal mechanism without the usage of agencies in the placement of Indonesian workers in Malaysia,” he said.
Suharto was at the Indonesian Tourism and Culinary Promotion launch at Restaurant Uwong Palembang in Bayan Lepas that featured Palembang cuisine.
Present at the event were Penang entrepreneurial development and trade and industry committee chairman Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain, honorary consul of Pakistan Datuk Seri Abdul Rafique Abdul Karim, honorary consul of Republic of Belgium Michel Van Crombrugge and honorary consul of Republic of Fiji Datuk Cha Hoo Peng.
