Parents struggling with gadget-addicted children can look forward to a new community platform designed to steer young minds back to books and appreciation of Malaysia’s heritage.
The inaugural Selangor Children’s Literature Festival, taking place at Shah Alam Convention Centre (SACC) and SA Central from Aug 28 to 31, aims to offer wholesome alternatives to screen time.
Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) director Datin Mastura Muhamad said the festival marked a departure from traditional book fairs towards a more inclusive community platform.
She said the move came amid concerns over children’s growing dependence on mobile phones, with various parties urged to act quickly in creating safer spaces and alternatives.
“Many young parents are now grappling with the challenge of raising children who spend too much time on gadgets.
“In many cases, mobile phones have become a way to calm children during meals or religious activities.
“That is why the government must take action,” she told Bernama during an event in Shah Alam.
“We must provide safe and supportive spaces where parents and children can learn, interact and spend meaningful time together.”
Mastura said batik art would serve as its main theme to encourage children to appreciate and take pride in Malaysia’s cultural heritage from an early age.
Activities lined up include folk tale storytelling sessions featuring Naga Tasik Chini and Si Tanggang, a maze, cosplay performances and a charity run.
She said the festival would also include a special seminar space for parents, with sessions covering parenting, financial planning and the latest developments in the arts and literacy sectors.
Mastura called on local publishers to further develop the children’s literature market, citing the sector’s promising prospects showcased during her visit to the Frankfurt International Book Fair.
“I hope more publishers will come forward with books that inspire and shape young minds,” she said.
