Lack of attention may be caused by hearing loss

ONE of the more common reasons parents and teachers discipline children is because of their failure to pay attention.

However, at times, the root cause may be due to hearing loss and not intentional disobedience.

Lions Club of Ipoh Evergreen president Sylvia Lee, who is also an audiologist, said the club recently assisted an 11-year-old boy who had lost his hearing.

“The boy was found to have only 10% hearing ability in his left ear and 50% in his right ear.

“As there was a long waiting list at the government hospital, the club decided to help as the child has had poor academic results linked to his hearing loss, which was not known to him or others.“His grandmother said his teachers had been scolding him and labelling him a slow learner when his hearing problem was the main issue,” she said. The club is giving out 28 sets of hearing aid for the needy and underprivileged children from the B40 households.

“The last date to apply for the aid is Aug 15,” Lee said.

Hearing loss awareness is one of the club’s core projects for the year.

“We hope to carry this message to the public because early intervention can help the child before it develops into a behavioural issue.

“Signs to look out for include delayed speech, frequent runny nose, sneezing, sore throat and allergy, poor pronunciation or sounding tongue-tied,” Lee said.

“As the pandemic has forced more parents to stay home, there is a need for increased awareness as previously, teachers and caregivers may not have paid close attention to the child,” she added.

Lee said parents and teachers were welcome to contact the club for a free hearing assessment for their children at KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital.
