FOLLOWING the surge in Covid-19 cases and the impact of movement restrictions on livelihoods, Yayasan MRCB started a programme providing food baskets to marginalised communities in Penang, Perak and the Klang Valley.
A total of RM380,000 was allocated for the aid programme.
To ensure immediate relief, wider reach and efficient distribution, the foundation cooperated with Malaysian Relief Agency, Yayasan Orang Buta Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Coalition of Women Organisations, Development of Human Resources for Rural Areas, Badan Kebajikan Mutiara Putrajaya and Food Aid Foundation.
A total of 2,330 B40 families and welfare homes were identified to receive the food baskets in June and July, including single mothers, visually impaired persons, people who are out of jobs as well as low-income communities.
Each food basket contains basic necessities, including rice, sugar, biscuits, Milo, cooking oil, flour, anchovies, milk powder, eggs and fresh vegetables.
A total of 1,200 food baskets have been distributed, and the balance will be delivered soon.
Yayasan MRCB chairman Datin Jasmine Abdullah Heng said the project aimed to provide immediate relief and mitigate the effects of the health crisis in communities.
“It is also to ease the emotional and mental stress experienced by those in the low-income category and underprivileged groups.
“We are deeply grateful for the support of the NGO partners and volunteers who ensure the food baskets reach the recipients promptly,” she said.
Jasmine added that as more people needed their help, the foundation was appealing to other corporations or individuals to support its efforts either in kind or through cash contributions.
All cash contributions to Yayasan MRCB are tax-exempt and can be made to CIMB Account 8007 749 279.
