A TOTAL of 144,000 people have registered to be vaccinated in the central Seberang Prai district in Penang, said Seberang Jaya assemblyman Dr Afif Bahardin.

Over 600 people are being vaccinated daily at Seberang Perai Arena Convention Centre in Prai.

“We hope more people can come forward to register themselves for the vaccine but the most important thing after registering is to turn up.

“We hope they will try their best to keep their appointments because we need to help the vaccination process intensify.

“We want to see more people vaccinated in order for us to achieve herd immunity.

“As we have seen a few clusters lately, we hope the vaccination process can be intensified, ” he said during a visit to the vaccination centre in Prai on Tuesday.

Dr Afif said while many registered for the vaccine, almost 20% of the recipients did not turn up when they were assigned a date.

“We appeal to these people to try their best to make it.

“Our entire community can only achieve herd immunity once they are vaccinated and develop immunity.”

Meanwhile, Dr Afif said a majority of the recipients at the centre were happy to get their vaccine shots.

“From signing in to getting vaccinated, the process is quick and takes merely 20 to 30 minutes.

“We thank the state Health Department for this and hope the momentum can be improved, ” he added.

Octogenarian Peh Ah Moi, 84, said she was relieved to receive her vaccine shot with no discomfort.

“The entire process was smooth and I have not experienced any side effects so far.

“I registered early and was given a date within a month so I feel the waiting period was not that long.

“My second dose is scheduled for May 25, so I will be coming here again.”

Peh said that so far, only she and her daughter, who is a dentist, had received their shots in the family.

“I really do hope all six of my other immediate family members will receive their vaccine shots soon, ” she said.
