College’s annual bursary award open for applications


Hor says with this award, successful applicants have an advantage of a secured tuition fee assistance package even before the official release of their examination results.

JOHOR BARU: Sunway College Johor Baru is accepting applications for the Special Bursary Award 2021 programme that aims to help all-rounders who excel both in academia and extra-curricular activities.

Sunway College Johor Baru principal Hor Poh Choo said this scheme, now in its eighth edition, was open to all Malaysian students who would be sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations which were rescheduled to commence on Feb 22,2021.

“Malaysian candidates for the international O-Levels or IGCSE examinations in 2020 are also eligible to apply.

“Each year, the college receives hundreds of applications from students mainly within the state of Johor, while there has been a notable increase in applicants from out of state.

“This special award was first introduced in 2012 and has over the years, evolved to suit the local education landscape and the ever-changing needs of secondary school students, ” she said in a statement here.

She added that over 200 applicants were awarded the Special Bursary last year, valued at RM3.1mil to enable these students to pursue their choice of a pre-university or professional accountancy foundation at Sunway College Johor Baru.

The award, which ranges from RM5,000 to RM15,000 will take the form of a tuition fee waiver, with extremely outstanding applicants standing a chance to possibly receive a full scholarship offer.

“The cost of higher education has become an increasing concern in recent times and many have put the decision to study further on hold until they are able to secure some form of scholarship or financial assistance.

“This is even more crucial today, given the economic challenges faced as a result of Covid-19 and the movement control order.

“With this award, successful applicants have an advantage of a secured tuition fee assistance package even before the official release of their examination results, ” added Hor.

Sunway College Johor Baru offers the secondary school leaver a choice of four pre-university programmes, namely the Australian Matriculation, Cambridge A-Levels and Monash University Foundation Year and Foundation in Business as well as a professional foundation pathway leading to the ACCA Qualification.

Past award recipients have successfully completed their pre-university studies and gained entry into renowned institutions such as National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, Monash University, University of Melbourne, University of Hong Kong, London School of Economics and Political Science and Imperial College London.

In recent years, there has also been an increase in students applying to and gaining admission into local public universities including Universiti Malaya and Universiti Sains Malaysia.

The college is also the only institution in Johor to be awarded Platinum status as approved learning partner by ACCA, the United Kingdom for the provision of professional accounting programmes.

In addition to consistently high pass rates, Sunway College Johor Baru has nurtured 73 Malaysian/ Global award winners to-date.
