SIBU: A popular public park in Jalan Bukit Lima here, Kutien Memorial Park, is in poor shape due to neglect.
Built 17 years ago, the park was a joint project between Sibu Kutien Association and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
Former president of Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI), Dr Hii Sui Cheng, said he was appalled by the park’s condition now.
He said SMC must take action and restore it to its former beauty.
“The park needs proper and regular maintenance, especially the water lily pond.
“It was such a pretty sight and must be maintained, ” he pointed out.
He said that besides the pond, the walking path was also cracked which posed a danger to users.
A frequent visitor to the park, Pang Chui Hua said that he too was shocked with its condition.
“The park must be restored. Put the right people to do the job and maintain it, ” he said, adding that the toilets at the park were also in deplorable condition.
“Visitors using this facility are charged 20sen per entry but look at the condition, it is disgusting, ” said an angry Pang.
The 1.2ha Kutien Memorial Park was built in honour of the pioneers of the Kutien clan, one of the 10 Foochow sub-clans.
