MILO UHT is expanding its network of drop-off points for its CAREton Project with the addition of 99 Speedmart as the campaign’s partner.
The pilot phase will see CAREton recycling bins placed at 100 of the mini market chain’s stores in the Klang Valley for 99 Speedmart customers and local communities to drop off their empty UHT beverage packs.
During the unveiling of the partnership at Wisma 99 Speedmart in Klang, the partners announced that they aimed to collect and recycle 400,000 used beverage packs by year end.
Launched in 2012, the CAREton Project is a collaboration between Milo UHT and Tetra Pak to collect used beverage cartons to be recycled into roofing tiles and panel boards for Orang Asli homes as well as other community projects.
“We have successfully collected over 95 million drink packs since 2012, helping to build over 250 houses from this programme alone, ” said Nestle (M) Bhd chief executive officer Juan Aranols.
“The CAREton project has been reaching out to schools, offices and selected communities over the years.
“Through our partnership with 99 Speedmart, we hope to have a greater impact on the project as it offers an opportunity to scale up the initiative even further.
“We hope to have the recycling bins at over 1,000 of 99 Speedmart stores in future, ” he said.
Aranols said the project accepted all UHT packs, regardless of their manufacturer origins.
Instead of throwing away the UHT packs, customers just need to flatten the items and dispose them at the nearest CAREton bin.
99 Speedmart founder and managing director Lee Thiam Wah said: “We are thrilled to be a part of the CAREton Project, which provides us with the opportunity to drive environmentally-friendly behaviour among our customers.
“We hope this joint effort will encourage the community to start recycling their used drink packs with the CAREton recycling bins which will be located in front of selected 99 Speedmart stores.”
